Iphone shift special characters on OPKL keys
The most common punctuation characters missing in the main alpha iPhone keyboard are the colon, semi colon, single quote and double quotes. The O, P, K, and L keys are already a pale grey. Why not add a opt where they have the colon, semi colon, single quote and double quotes as shift characters on these keys - it would mean there was less times you would need to go to the option keyboard.
We’ve now (version 4.4.1) made all of these common characters accessible after pressing opt, no additional shift is needed. Is this alternative still needed? If so, how would the uppercase versions of these letters be obtained? And is this about getting to the keys (which would be same number of taps either way), or labeling them in some way so the character “behind them on opt” is visible?

It’s about labeling them so the character is visible. Just have the special character at the top left or right of the key so you know what to press. Perhaps it could also highlight as you press Opt. It’s just they are so common to use. A lot of normal keyboards have special characters above the QWERTY keys for the same reason.
